How to increase M2 SSD on PS5 by installing Storage or expand storage with additional SSD. Good news for all gamers, because PlayStation 5 now supports Expandable M.2 Expandable Storage in the latest software update.

Fans have been yearning for the PlayStation 5 to finally unlock the M.2 slot on their PS5 for expandable storage. Sony finally listened to players and enabled the feature in beta with a very specific set of requirements a while back.

Still, only a select few can test this feature and the general public is sitting quietly, waiting for the public version to be released.

Well, it’s time to rejoice because the second edition of the massive system software update, which was released in September 2022, contains the update gamers have been waiting for.

Finally Sony added M.2 support which allows you to expand your PS5 system storage. Not only that, there’s a lot more in this update like added features.

3D Audio for PS5 . TV Speakers

Before we get to the heart of this discussion, let’s talk about the other features Sony has added in this update, and there are many more.

Undoubtedly, the most notable addition is the 3D Audio support for the TV speakers. Now, you can harness the power of the Tempest Engine and enjoy 3D Audio on your TV’s native speakers.

The latest update will allow players to convert audio coming from dual channel speakers into a three-dimensional sound landscape.

3D audio has been supported with headsets since launch but tomorrow’s update marks the first time it’s available on TV speakers.

To actually use 3D audio, you have to acoustically measure the room, which is basically a layman term for “room correction”.

The microphone on your PS5 DualSense controller will be used to measure room acoustics and optimize sound accordingly.

M.2 SSD Support Adds PS5 . Capacity

After months of impatient waiting, Sony has heard the cries of the fans and is ready to give them what they want.

The PlayStation 5’s M.2 slot will be unlocked with this update, opening the door to tons of storage opportunities on the PS5. No need to delete and reinstall games anymore, now you can just buy an M.2 SSD in your favorite e-Commerce and enjoy your favorite games directly from it.

The M.2 SSD lets players download, copy, and play PS5 and PS4 games, along with media apps like Netflix and Spotify.

You can play games directly from the M.2 SSD or transfer games between internal and external storage to your heart’s content.

Before you decide to look for and buy the cheapest M.2 SSD available at Tokopedia, Shopee, Bukalapak, Lazada, Blibli, JD ID, you must know the requirements well.

Sony has set a strict code for what M2 SSD types qualify as PS5 compatible and what doesn’t.

There are sizes and performance standards that M.2 SSDs have to match in order to work on the PS5. You can see the official terms on the PlayStation 5 website.

Nonetheless, Sony’s guidelines seem a bit too harsh as many people in the community have tested the supposedly incompatible drive on paper, but it works as usual aka works normally without any issues or errors.

I wrote an article on this whole M.2 SSD PS5 expandable storage issue, comparing two very different routes that Microsoft and Sony have chosen to address this issue.

How to Install M.2 SSD PS5 Adding Internal Storage

To use expandable storage on PS5 (Expandable Storage) you have to remove the side panel from the device.

Make sure you have unplugged the power cable, this step is a little tricky, but don’t worry because the PS5’s body is quite sturdy, so don’t worry, you won’t break the panel.

After removing both panels, you need to find the M.2 SSD slot. Its position is on the left side of the fan; it’s on the side where the PS5’s disk drive is.

You will need a screwdriver to open the cover on the M.2 SSD slot, and to remove the screw that holds the drive in place.

Once the cover is removed, you will find the black Sony supplied screw at the very top in the slot. Remove this and use it to hold the SSD in place.

Sony recommends going for an M.2 SSD with a heatsink, so if you have purchased a Gen4 one, there are a variety of heatsinks you can buy to attach to the SSD which will help with cooling.

Now that the M.2 SSD is in place, the sonat can reattach the cover to the slot and then gently slide the side panels back into place on either side. Reconnect the power cable, and turn on the PS5.

If the M.2 SSD you purchased is not compatible, you will receive a warning from the PS5 that you need a Gen4 drive with at least 256GB of space. Check out: First PS5 Rental in Bandung.

Otherwise, you’ll have to go ahead and format the drive for use on the PS5. Make sure before doing that you have backed up any important data on the drive if you have used it on another system.

Formatting takes less than 10 seconds on a Corsair Force MP600 (2TB) drive. Once formatting is complete, the PS5 will quickly test the drive’s speed and warn you that if you have problems with games installed on your M.2 SSD, try moving them to internal storage.

You can then freely move your installed PS5 games to the M.2 SSD storage, or install new games from the PlayStation Store directly to the storage.

During testing, it took about 30 seconds to move one large game from internal storage to the Corsair Force MP600 Pro (2TB) drive.

That’s the guide on how to install an M.2 SSD on the PS5 to add internal and external storage capacity so that it has more space to store lots of PS4 or PlayStation 5 games.
