How to find out the type of RAM on your laptop without disassembling it
How to Find Out the Type of Laptop RAM – Apart from the processor and hard disk, another component that plays a big role in the performance of a laptop is RAM. Random Access Memory is a component that affects the speed of laptop performance. The larger the RAM capacity, the faster the laptop’s performance will be.
RAM’s function is as temporary storage of the operating system, application programs and data that is being used. To maximize your laptop’s performance, it is important to know the type of RAM in your laptop.
Benefits of Knowing Our Laptop’s RAM Type
How to find out what type of laptop RAM is needed to maximize laptop use. Below are the benefits you can get if you know the type of RAM on your laptop.
- You can find out the laptop specifications needed, because each job requires different laptop specifications.
- Simplifies the process of upgrading RAM components. By knowing the type of RAM on your laptop, you can give an idea of the memory that will be used.
- Minimize errors when upgrading or replacing RAM components. Once you know exactly what type of RAM is installed in the laptop, you will minimize mistakes in buying components.
Know the difference between SDRAM and DDRAM in laptops
RAM is divided into two types, namely SDRAM and DDRAM.
SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic Random Access) is a type of dynamic RAM used by older computers and is included in solid state computers.
DDRAM (Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory) is RAM that has very fast performance speeds. By using the Clock signal to transfer data, it causes the transfer process to be twice as fast at the same time.
There are several ways to find out the type of laptop RAM currently. One way is to use an external application which must be downloaded and installed first. However, this time we will discuss an easier way to find out the RAM on a laptop.
How to Find Out the Type of Laptop RAM without Disassembling it
Here’s how to find out your laptop’s RAM without software or relying on the “power” in the laptop without having to download other software:
1. Check the sticker on the laptop
Everything on the laptop body must have a function, including stickers. This sticker provides information in the form of CPU type, OS type and hard disk used on the laptop. Because this is default information, if you buy a second hand laptop, make sure you ask whether the laptop has been added or subtracted before. This is one of the easiest ways to find out the type of laptop RAM.
2. View RAM in Task Manager
Task manager is a laptop or computer tool that provides detailed information about applications and processes or services that are currently running. With the task manager we can find out what type of laptop RAM is being used. The method is as follows:
- Open the task manager, you can right click on the toolbar and select task manager, you can also use the shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+Del).
- Click the “Performance” tab then select the “Memory” menu.
- There you can see details of the RAM used on your laptop.
The way to find out is to look at the laptop RAM Speed. If the speed listed in the task manager is 2400 Mhz, then the laptop’s RAM type is DDR4. If the speed number is below 2400, for example 2133 Mhz then your laptop’s RAM is DDR3 or DDR3L.
3. With Command Prompt (CMD)
This tool is used to execute or run command lines which function to automate tasks through scripts or batch files. Don’t worry about the meaning which is quite confusing, in practice it will be much easier to do. Here’s how to find out the type of laptop RAM using the Command Prompt:
- Open command prompt using shortcut (win+R)
- After that the “Run” box will appear, type emd in the column then click ok.
- When the command prompt window appears, type the command Wmic MemoryChip Get BankLabel, Capacity, MemoryType, TypeDetail, Speed, Tag then click enter.
- The number under the Memory Type column shows the type of RAM.
4. Using the CPU-Z application
If you are not satisfied with the information provided by the 3 methods above, you can use this last method. However, you have to download and install 1 application called CPU-Z. Don’t worry, the application size is small, only 2MB.
Here are the steps on how to see the RAM type on a laptop with CPU-Z:
- Download CPU-Z first here.
- Please install the CPU-Z application first.
- When finished, just open the CPU-Z application on the laptop.
- There you will see several menus, select menu Memory.
- In the Memory menu you will see information regarding type, size, channel, frequency and much more. As seen in the following image.
